If You Like “X” Book, Play This Video Game

I love video games. I don’t play nearly as much as I would like to, but they are something I really enjoy. Yet, I rarely talk about them on my blog. That mainly has to do with the fact that I don’t know many people (even in this community) who play games, or if they do, the same games I play.

This is actually so strange to me because games are like books, but you live in them. The stories that video games tell can be epic and, guess what? Instead of just reading it, you get to live inside of it! Instead of reading about the girl who kicked someone’s ass, you get to play as the girl who kicked someone’s ass. Instead of reading about dragons burning down towns, you get to kill the dragon burning down the town. In fact, some games are even based on books!

I figured, we always recommend books and tv shows to each other, why not some games? So, here I am to recommend some video games to you that share some of the elements from our favorite books!

*Content Warning: Most of these games include violence, sex, drug/alcohol use, and other mature elements. I don’t discuss that but the trailers below the descriptions might. There are ratings before the trailers start to let you know what might be in it.

If you like westerns, gunfights on horseback, or liked Vengeance Road, Play Red Dead Redemption

Vengeance Road is about a gunslinging girl on a mission for revenge for her father’s murder. Red Dead Redemption is about a gunslinging man on a mission to clear his name to protect his family. If you like a good western story and want to explore a vast area based on 1900’s USA & Mexico, play this game. Red Dead Redemption is complete with horseback riding, hunting, gang shootouts, and there is even DLC with zombies (if you don’t know what DLC is, it means downloadable content which is extra stuff you can add on to your game. In other words, a novella in game form)

If you like survival stories, clashing cultures, or liked The 100, play Far Cry 3

While these stories don’t align perfectly, there are similar elements to it. In Far Cry 3, you’re stranded in a foreign place during a skydiving trip. You soon learn that the place is inhabited by pirates who clash with the native people. I chose this for The 100 because of the clash between cultures and the fact you have to survive while their feud unfolds in front of you – similar to The 100’s Mountain Men, Grounders, and Arkadia.

If you like LOTR or any high fantasy,
play The Witcher 3 or Skyrim

If you know anything about these games, this one is a pretty obvious choice. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Skyrim are basically the video game version of all of our favorite high fantasy novels. Dragons, sword fights, grand hall feasts, kings, queens, magic – it’s all there in both of these games.

If you like pirate badassery, or liked Starflight or felt cheated after Blackhearts, play Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag (for a combo of reasons)

If you were anything like me after reading Blackhearts, you felt cheated out of a pirate story, but after reading Starflight realized you loved space pirates and that all you wanted out of Blackhearts was more pirate badassery. If that is relatable, then Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag is for you. This is a game for every pirate fan. It’s another open-world game where you get to upgrade your ship (yes, you can actually sail the open sea, go fishing, hunt for treasure), battle other ships & commandeer them, upgrade your own town on an island, and more. Seriously, if you like pirates, why aren’t you already playing this?

If you like mythology, God battles,
or liked Percy Jackson, play Smite

Ok, ok, this game does not have an actual plot like a book would. However, if you’re into mythology, it’s worth a play. Smite is a MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena) which essentially just means that you play as a character on a team with the goal to defeat the opposing team – like on a battlefield. In this one, though, you get to play as a God. All of them are inspired by real mythology – Greek, Egyptian, Hindu, Mayan, Japanese, Chinese, Roman, and Norse. I suck at this game, but it’s pretty cool. Also, it’s free!

If you like morally gray characters, good vs evil, or liked The Young Elites, play Fable III

The Young Elites focuses on a character that is morally gray. She has to make decisions that may not be necessarily good – and by the end of the whole trilogy, those decisions catch up to her. If those are characters you like, play Fable III. In Fable, you get to make the decision whether you want to be good or bad throughout the game. Those decisions will affect how other characters treat you and the outcome of the game.

If you like zombies, post-apocalyptic settings, or liked Feed, play The Last of Us or State of Decay

This is pretty self-explanatory. Like zombies? Play these zombie games! They’re a bit different depending on what you are looking for. The Last of Us has more of a developed story, and its a tad more linear (which means you don’t explore as much and the plot guides you through the game). State of Decay is all about survival – literally. The point of the game is to survive. You have to build your compound, rescue survivors, and if you die – that character is gone permanently and you have to play as one of the other survivors.

Other games worth mentioning but I didn’t want to make this post a mile long

  • For those who like adventure like Indiana Jones, play Tomb Raider
  • For those who like anything dystopian, play Fallout 4
  • For those who like steampunk, like Rebel Mechanics or The Infernal Devices, play Dishonored
  • For those who like romance, real-life and any NA or contemporary, play The Sims
  • For those who like space adventures like Illuminae, play Mass Effect or Halo

Do you play games? Have you played any I listed above?
If you don’t play games, did any of these sound/look like ones that can convince you otherwise? 😉

This is such a fun post!! My main issue with video games is that I am APPALLINGLY bad at aiming any kind of weapon. I refuse to pick up any FPS at all. My favorite game to play is Diablo 3 and it’s the one I always come back to again and again. I tried playing Skyrim for awhile a few years ago but I got really overwhelmed with the open world. I’ve been thinking about giving it another try though. I’m definitely going to be checking out Smite! Thanks for sharing!

GIRL. ME TOO. I’m terrible at it. I ALWAYS have aim assist on if it’s available lol A lot of these games are actually open world (I LOVE open world), so they might be a little overwhelming for you. I get like that sometimes too, though. They’re so big & there is so much to do! Especially if it doesn’t have fast travel — UGH hahah

I’m not a huge gamer myself, but I love watching people do play throughs of video games! They are basically like another form of story-telling. The Last of Us is my favorite; I’ve watched it so many times.

haha that’s awesome! I like to watch my husband play the games I know I’ll suck at lol So I get it 😀

I’ve recently started gaming properly so I love this post!! A lot of these games I’ve been wanting to try for a long time! The only one I’ve played is Dishonored but I’m desperate to get my hands on Red Dead Redemption and I’m very tempted by Fable, Witcher III, and Far Cry 3. I recently bought Assassin’s Creed Syndicate and the Ezio Collection and want to collect them all eventually.

Another recommendation for those who like adventure like Indiana Jones is the Uncharted series!! I binged all 4 of those in what was basically 5 days (if you disregard all the real life stuff that interrupted my game play).

    • Reply Molly 01/21/2017 at 7:32 am

That’s awesome! Another gamer! haha Dishonored has been a lot of fun so far (I just started it as well). The other ones you want to try I (obviously) recommend. For AC, I really like Black Flag and the first 3. Some of the other spin offs they made I wasn’t into.

I’ve been wanting to play Uncharted for a while! I don’t know why I haven’t. Is it PS4 only?

      • Reply Bec @ Readers in Wonderland 01/21/2017 at 10:03 pm

The Uncharted games are so good. Fantastic plots and hilarious characters. I’m not sure if they’re available on anything but the Playstation. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Xbox or PC version :/

        • Reply Molly 01/25/2017 at 5:34 am

Yeah, I don’t think I have either & all I have is a PS3 that is packed up & put away >.< haha

          • Bec @ Readers in Wonderland 01/25/2017 at 12:43 pm

I think you might be able to find the first three Uncharted games for PS3 if you looked around because they were originally released for that. Unfortunately Uncharted 4 is PS4 though :/

          • Molly 01/26/2017 at 6:05 am

Yeah, but then I have to hook up my PS3 hahahah >.< One day.

I play games as well and rarely blog about it as well as so few people seem to play games. It just feels like I am talking about a topic few people can relate to then. I do think I mostly play different games than you. but just like you I love games and don’t make nearly enough time for it. But I really like the idea for this post! The only one of the games mentioned here that I have is Skyrim.

    • Reply Molly 01/21/2017 at 7:33 am

Exactly. It kind of sucks because I want to talk about it more! I’ve actually been playing too many games for the past 2 weeks. I haven’t read or blogged at all because of them. Ooops.

  • Reply Kristen Burns 01/16/2017 at 6:59 pm

What a fun idea for a post! And those are gifs from the games?! They look so real! (You can tell I’m not a gamer lol.) It’s funny though, I read sci-fi/fantasy, yet the only game I play is the Sims which is just real life (I mean, I have the supernatural expansion pack but never even use it, I just bought it for the extra objects, haha). The mythology one sounds really cool, and so does Fable III because you can play as a bad character?! That’s awesome. State of Decay sounds cool too, but I’m just not good with games that are high action and you have to actually fight and kill things and whatnot. It’s stressful for me lol.

    • Reply Molly 01/21/2017 at 7:37 am

They are! I had the trailers embedded to this post as well but it looks like they didn’t work properly. Damn it. Graphics have gotten AMAZING. Also, I’m the same with The Sims. I buy expansions for the items, not whatever gameplay it adds hahah. Of the three games you mentioned, Fable 3 would probably be more up your alley then. The point of Smite is to kill people, and State of Decay you have to kill a lot of zombies. It’s kind of hack and slash though, so it doesn’t take a lot of skill to do it haha

This is really fun to read, even though I don’t play games! I’ve heard of Skyrim and played The Sims before, and currently my whole uni is obsessed with Fallout!
Btw I tagged you for Who Am I tag on my blog, I hope you’ll check it when you have the time <3 https://theliteraryhuntress.wordpress.com/2017/01/18/who-am-i/

The Sims is just as fun 😀 haha

Oh! thankyou! I’ll check it out 🙂

LOVE this post! Seriously, this is my favourite so far this year! This post is the best. ALL OF THE VIDEO GAMES. These suggestions / comparisons / whatever you want to call them were spot on. I love, love, love, love, love (do you get it yet?) this.

This post fills me with all sorts of happy. It’s been years since I’ve really sat down to play a video game, but there is so much nostalgia here. Unfortunately, the newest system I own is a PSX, and I *detest* playing computer games. So, I probably won’t play any of these. But I love this post. Make more of them. 😉

    • Reply Molly 01/21/2017 at 7:20 am

aw yay! All of these games are on the Xbox One >.< That's the system I play. But I do think some of them are also on ps4 if you ever upgrade!

      • Reply Jackie B @ Death by Tsundoku 01/22/2017 at 8:28 pm

Thanks for the heads up! I’ll have to keep an eye out for games on systems I might play in the future. 🙂

Love this post!! My gaming experience mostly includes The Sims ? but I looooove watching Lets Plays on YouTube so defs gonna look up some of these series. Fable III sounds really interesting! I really want to get more into gaming, but I don’t have any consoles and I feel like I’d be really bad at it. One game I actually did finish recently-ish though was Life is Strange which I LOVED!

    • Reply Molly 01/25/2017 at 5:32 am

I love The Sims! I was obsessed with it SO MUCH when I was younger. I still play it, just not as often haha. I’ve never watched anything on YouTube but you’re the second person to say they like watching others play games! I’ll have to look into it haha. I’m not the greatest at games. My aim SUCKS, but I find them really fun and the right type of game (most of these) aim doesn’t matter lol. OH OH I just started Life is Strange the other day! I’m still in the beginning though, like she just found out she can control time lol

LOVED Red Dead Redemption, now I need to read Vengeance Road! Also, I was debating what book to use for Far Cry today when I was taking photos, never would’ve thought to use the 100!

    • Reply Molly 02/13/2017 at 4:05 pm

YES! I loved it too! I can’t wait for RDR2! and yesssss read Vengeance Road. It’s like the girl YA version of the video game. Also, Far Cry was the hardest one but I HAD to include it and The 100 was really all I could think of. It can fit, if you just stretch it a little lol

  • Reply Lauren 03/13/2017 at 8:15 am

A friend of mine has Red Dead Redemption and it was very good playing what I did of it. 🙂
