Quick Reviews: 2 Shows, 4 Movies (Spoiler: I Didn’t Like Hamilton)

As I’m sure you know, there has been a lot of free time lately. What do I do with that time? I watch movies and tv shows. Honestly, I’ve watched a lot of stuff the last few months, both new and old. I’m not going to sit here and list/review all of them so I’m just going to share the most recent or the more memorable.

TELEVISION

Outer Banks

A group of teenagers from the wrong side of the tracks stumble upon a treasure map that unearths a long buried secret.

I was skeptical on this one but I actually really enjoyed it! It has some cheesy and unbelievable moments (but to be frank, the entire premise is also unbelievable – hidden treasure? Yeah. Ok). However, I thought it was a fun ride. Something crazy happens in each episode so it’ll keep you entertained. There’s a great friendship, a little romance, and action. You’ll love all the characters as you really get to know them and their personal struggles. . .but also how they help each other out as friends. This was a pleasant surprise and I’m glad I gave it a chance. Also, it got renewed!

CONTROL Z

When a hacker begins releasing students’ secrets to the entire high school, the socially isolated but observant Sofía works to uncover his/her identity.

This is a Mexican teen drama that also surprised me! I mean, the concept was kind of basic (it reminds me of Gossip Girl) but I ended up really enjoying it. It has all the teen drama you’d expect but it is a little darker. I actually cried during this because of how cruel teenagers can be. While the story does wrap up fairly well, it leaves it open enough for a season 2 – so fingers crossed it gets renewed!

MOVIES

CLOUD ATLAS

An exploration of how the actions of individual lives impact one another in the past, present and future, as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, and an act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution.

Confession: In order to understand this one, I had to google it. I hate to say that, but it’s true. Once I looked into the meaning behind the story and how the characters grew over time, I understood. Ultimately, I thought it was good! Sometimes you just need a little assistance. The acting is so-so, especially during the plot that took place in the future – man, that language was cringe worthy. Otherwise, I thought it was an interesting look at reincarnation, if our souls are connected, and the influence of the past on the future. Give it a try, if you haven’t.

THE WRONG MISSY

Tim thinks he’s invited the woman of his dreams on a work retreat to Hawaii, realizing too late he mistakenly texted someone from a nightmare blind date.

My husband and I have now watched this movie three times. Yes, three! We thought it was super cute and so funny. It is a bit predictable but it will make you laugh and warm your heart. Lauren Lapkus (who plays Missy) is hilarious. Just thinking about this movie makes me want to watch it for a fourth time! Honestly, I don’t even really like comedies so this is saying a lot. Probably one of my favorites in a long time!

THE WRETCHED

A defiant teenage boy, struggling with his parents’ imminent divorce, faces off with a thousand year-old witch, who is living beneath the skin of and posing as the woman next door.

Alright, that synopsis (from IMDB) kind of sucks. It makes it sound sort of dull but it’s not! If you need a bit of horror in your life, try it. I’ve watched this twice now and it was even better the second time around since I noticed all of the little hints throughout. It was funny watching it again because the second time was with my mom (who hadn’t seen it), so my husband and I just kept looking at each other whenever we noticed one of those hints (we obviously couldn’t spoil it for my mom). Anyways, it may not make you jump out of your seat in fear, but it’s a good psychological horror. The way it ended is both great and frustrating – give it a watch!

HAMILTON

The real life of one of America’s foremost founding fathers and first Secretary of the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton. Captured live on Broadway from the Richard Rodgers Theater with the original Broadway cast. (Do I even need to explain what this is? lol)

So, I’m about to be disowned by everyone but. . .I did not like this. I didn’t really enjoy the songs and some of their voices just really got on my nerves. I think the only voice (male) that I didn’t hate was Jonathon Groff (who played King George) but also, dude spits everywhere so it was hard to watch >.< Anyways, I just didn’t like it. I know, I know! Blasphemy. But if I have to hear “I’m helpless” or “I’m not throwing away my shot” one more fucking time. . .

This is not an exhaustive list of everything I’ve watched but I wanted to chat about at least a few things! Have you watched any of these? Will you give any a try after my mini review? What have you been watching lately?

The Wretched sounds like something I’ll be watching soon! So sorry Hamilton didn’t work for you. When I saw the play live I didn’t realize how much spitting there was but man, Groff lets it fly.

If you watch it, let me know what you think! And omg yes he LETS IT FLY. I don’t know though. I may have to rewatch it and give it a second chance. My husband has since watched it like 3 more times and he said it was even better the second time lol So clearly I’m missing something great?
