6 Shows I Loved or Hated: Cults, 70’s Band, Zombies, Cowboys, & More

I know I’ve already said this before, but my husband and I are finally catching up on watching some shows we’ve been wanting to watch! With a toddler, it’s hard to watch the more “adult” shows, but now that he’s gotten older, its actually easier to keep him distracted while we watch something in the background 😆 I’ve already gone over some of the movies I’ve enjoyed recently, so today is all about the television! I won’t be going over everything we’ve watched, just some of the shows I’ve recently loved…or maybe not so much. Here we go:

»«

THE DEVIL IN OHIO

When a psychiatrist shelters a mysterious cult escapee, her world is turned upside down as the girl’s arrival threatens to tear her own family apart.
Where to watch: Netflix
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐.5

This is a more recent watch in this list as we just binge watched it last week – in one day! It was surprisingly enjoyable – though a bit predictable. It really isn’t too unique, but what it did have going for it was an MC that was super unlikable (at least for me). Also, one of the best things about this show was that ending. Oh, the sweet karma towards (unnamed characters because I don’t want to give away anything). If you’ve watched this, please let me know what you thought of the View Spoiler ».

DAISY JONES AND THE SIX

Following the rise of rock band Daisy Jones and The Six through the 1970s Los Angeles music scene on their quest for worldwide icon status.
Where to watch: Amazon Prime
Rating: ⭐⭐

This was much better than the book, as I suspected it would be. However, and please don’t shank me, I still didn’t love it. Daisy still drove me insane, and Billy was not a good guy overall. I did like some of the changes they made, and I think the method of storytelling works really well as a tv show. I also saw a recent article talking about Smartphone Face and how the actors in this show suffered from it. It’s an interesting take, and now I can’t unsee it. Definitely take a look at the article if you have time!

THE LAST OF US

After a global pandemic destroys civilization, a hardened survivor takes charge of a 14-year-old girl who may be humanity’s last hope.
Where to watch: HBO
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐

Another one that I deeply apologize for. Please don’t hate me, but I did not like this. The video game was so good. That I absolutely loved. But the show was so disappointing. It felt like the later seasons of The Walking Dead – 2 seconds of action, 500 years of talking. I wanted more zombies, for starters. I don’t think the show did a very good job at showing the different types of zombies. Second, even the encounters with other humans felt super rushed – except that one episode that was absolutely way too long for what it was. I will say there were some great nods to the video game, but I think it missed a lot of really great opportunities to really bring the game to life in the show.

YELLOWSTONE

A ranching family in Montana faces off against others encroaching on their land.
Where to watch: Paramount
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Ohhh, honey, don’t even get me started. I absolutely adore this show. My husband and I put it on on a whim one time and quickly became obsessed. We binge watched all of it in a couple of weeks. Beth is one of my all-time favorite characters. Yes, she’s a badass, but she also has so much depth and character growth. I will watch the show just for her. I’m sad it will be coming to an end soon, but I’m glad I finally gave it a chance and got to know Beth & Rip.

THE HEAD

Winter has fallen on the South Pole. A small team, known as the Winterers, will remain at the Polaris VI Antarctic Research Station to continue their innovative research, a crucial part in the fight against climate change. But when spring comes, summer commander Johan Berg, returns to the station only to find the entire team are either dead or missing. A killer is on the loose.
Where to watch: HBO
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

This was a random one I put on during my morning workouts (yes, I watch shows while working out because otherwise it is impossible to watch a show that just I want to watch). It was a surprisingly good. While I did kind of guess what was going on early on, I was still intrigued by how it was all going to come together. There is a season 2, but I feel season 1 wraps up nicely if you just want a 1 season type of show to watch.

FOUNDATION

A complex saga of humans scattered on planets throughout the galaxy all living under the rule of the Galactic Empire.
Where to watch: Apple TV+
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

We watched this a little while ago so my memory isn’t perfect, but I do remember really enjoying it. It’s a complex world that weaves together over a course of time. I think the entire series is a 1,000 year timeline. So you could imagine how much is covered in the first season. I will say this is not one to put on while you have a toddler running around because you do need to pay attention 😆 But, y’all, don’t sleep on Apple TV+ – they have some really great shows.

Honorable Mention:

SILO

In a toxic dystopian future where a community exists in a giant silo hundreds of stories deep underground, men and women live in a society full of regulations they believe are meant to protect them.
Where to watch: Apple TV+

Again, don’t sleep on Apple TV+! We just started this one since it only has 2 episodes and premiered on May 5th – but it is already so good. I’m definitely intrigued and wish I had more of the season to watch now. Also, side note, I’m a dummy. I did not realize this was the show based on the book WOOL. I just bought Wool a couple of weeks ago to read it before this show, but thought it was titled something else. So, now I’m going to try to quick read the book 😉

Have you watched any of these? Are you going to?
What shows have you watched recently that you enjoyed?

I don’t have Apple because I refuse to buy more streaming. 😉 But I did do the trial thing just for the week. So I may have to binge one of their shows just to see what they’re like! 🙂 Glad you found some TV to enjoy.

Oooo try Ted Lasso if you like funny/warm & fuzzy shows! Shrinking is also a heart warming one. Servant is good but also really weird. See is an interesting post-apocalyptic one as well. Foundation for sci-fi. And then I’d recommend Silo but if you only have it for a week, you’d only get to watch 3 episodes lol

I know everyone loves Yellowstone and I definitely need to try it out soon. I just need to do it when I am ready to binge a show. lol

It’s so refreshing to find someone who agrees with me about Daisy Jones. 😂 And the article you shared about “Smartphone face” is very interesting. I’m always thinking, “Those people’s teeth are way too pretty” when I’m watching a historical show. It’s very distracting. lol We did really like The Last of Us, though. But I haven’t played the game. I watched my daughter play it a bit, though. We tried a few episodes of Yellowstone but it was too soap opera-y for me. I’ll be exited to hear what you think about Silo. Not sure if I’ll wait to watch it until I read the book or not. 🤔 Great post!

OH MY GOODNESS RIGHT!? Hello! Welcome to our 2 person club for Daisy Jones hate lol I can totally see that with the teeth! Or just like the perfect “no makeup” look for eras that didn’t really have make up OR didn’t have make up like it is today but their eyebrows are like crisp to perfection. hahah

I wanted to read the book before watching Silo but oopsies. I’m going to try to read it kind of in tandem with watching it.

Yes!! 😍 Oooh, reading in tandem. I would love to see you post about your experience!

I neeed to watch Silo! But I am very behind in shows. I also want to watch Foundation, but again, I am a mess heh. I did love The Last of Us, but I had a feeling that people would have mixed feelings- I prefer the “more talking, fewer zombies” approach, but I know not everyone does! I think it is also hard if you played and loved the game, because it probably took away a lot of the suspense of the show? My assumption, anyway! That article about “smartphone face” is quite interesting! I am just feeling like neither the show or the book are for me, so I will be skipping that one. The Devil in Ohio and the Head both look fairly interesting, so thanks for putting those on my radar, I will check them out! Also I keep hearing amazing things about Yellowstone but I just can’t make myself watch it and I just don’t know why! I will have to try though!

Ohhh definitely give Foundation a try! I also think you’d like Silo (so far at least) since you loved The 100! It has similar vibes…not super similar story, just vibes lol Try Yellowstone! Give it a couple of episodes before you really form an opinion. I wasn’t super into it at first, but then I was COMMITTED hahah
