3 Horror Films Reviewed in a Minute

I recently went on a random horror film binge and watched three in 2 days. I don’t know what came over me, I just wanted a good scare! Well, I got it and I wanted to share my thoughts with you. Instead of giving each movie their own review (because I really don’t think I could write that much about them), here are the three movies I watched with mini “reviewed in a minute” reviews 🙂

crimsonpeakCrimson Peak

Release date: October 16, 2015

Director: Guillermo del Toro
Screenplay: Guillermo del Toro, Matthew Robbins
Starring: Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain, Tom Hiddleston
Rated: R

Rating: 3.5 Stars

Crimson Peak was definitely not what I expected. I sat there trying to guess the whole way through what was happening and I was wrong. I thought the story was interesting and mysterious, but it wasn’t an on-the-edge-of-your-seat type horror, although, it did give me a few jumps. The main character, Edith, was a walking contradiction – strong female character, falls in love in 2 minutes flat. So, yes, very much instalove…in a movie. Also, the CGI was not very convincing, so that ruined some of the more “horror” scenes for me. However, I still enjoyed this film for the storyline, the visuals (non-bad CGI visuals) and the acting. I loved Hiddleston and Chastain in this film, how could you not?!

the visitThe Visit

Release date: September 11, 2015

Director: M. Night Shyamalan
Screenplay: M. Night Shyamalan
Starring: Olivia DeJonge, Ed Oxenbould, Deanna Dunagan, Peter McRobbie, Kathryn Hahn
Rated: PG-13

Rating: 5 Stars

Surprisingly, I enjoyed this movie! Again, it’s not what I expected (maybe I should stop assuming what movies are about, hmm? 😉 ) This was a suspenseful and eerie film that definitely had me closing my eyes – especially because I hate when things jump out at you, and this movie had that. Also, there were plenty of those “What are you doing?! Don’t do that!” yelling-at-the-screen moments. The home video filming contributed to that creepy, suspenseful feeling as well. My rating says a lot about my enjoyment of this film because M. Night Shyamalan is not one of my favorite directors. He definitely toned down the laughable weirdness for this film.

The Witch

The Witch

Release date: February 19, 2016

Director: Robert Eggers
Screenplay: Robert Eggers
Starring: Anya Taylor-Joy, Ralph Ineson, Kate Dickie, Harvey Scrimshaw
Rated: R

Rating: 4.5 Stars

Oh, my, where do I even start? This is a different type of horror film altogether. There’s really nothing to compare it to. The family was banished from the plantation they lived in because of their outspoken religious beliefs, but when the resettle at a quiet cottage with a corn field, their misfortune intensifies. They use prayer and their faith to try to get through their troubles, but when things get worse, they begin blaming “the witch”. She may be someone in the woods, or she may be their own flesh and blood. This film shows a family torn apart by this superstition (or is it?). The entire theme is heavily religious and satanic.

This is not a thrilling scare – it’s a film that makes you feel dread, with a creep-up-on-you type suspense. While the middle of this film was a bit of a drag, and sometimes their heavy accents were hard to understand, this was an excellent film. It’s a refresher from all the typical jumps and gore from other horror films.

I LOVE horror movies! They’re one of the few movies I actually watch. I need to see all of these especially The Witch.

The Witch is definitely a unique one. Go into it with an open mind, for sure. An possibly subtitles xD It’s hard to understand their thick accents sometimes. lol

I am awful at watching horror movies because I am so easily scared, but I have wanted to watch Crimson Peak – and maybe if the CGI detracts from the scariness I might actually be ok!

I love being scared! I especially like the ones that make you jump. Crimson Peak wasn’t AS scary and yes, the CGI definitely ruined some of the “scarier” moments for me. So you might be okay with that one 🙂 Although, you might not want to trust me. I have a friend that hates blood and gore and I told her to come see The Evil Dead with me because it had no gore – without knowing there is literally a scene where it RAINS BLOOD. I didn’t even know xD

I am usually ok with gore, oddly enough its just jump scares and creepiness that get me every time! I am going to trust you and watch it and we’ll see what I think! 🙂

I’m like that too! I’m fine with gore but will cover my eyes if I think something will jump out at me lol xD

Ooh, sounds like I need to watch the Witch! I saw the Visit last month and it creeped me out! Have you seen It Follows? I had a nightmare after that one!

In The Visit, the scene when they are crawling under the house freaked me out so much! Lots of jump scares in that movie. The Witch is more dialogue driven and dark. If you watch it let me know what you think 🙂 Also, no I haven’t seen that movie. I’m intrigued! I’ll have to look into it 🙂

Crawling under the house freaked me out too! I was watching it alone and it was horrible haha
I’ll let you know when I get around to seeing the Witch!
