A Wolverine, A Beauty, and 5 Rangers: Mini Movie Reviews

I mean, do I even need an intro? Nah. Here are my mini reviews of the three films I’ve seen in theaters recently:

Logan

  • Released: March 3, 2017
  • Directed by: James Mangold
  • Screenplay by: James Mangold, Scott Frank +
  • Starring: Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Dafne Keen, Boyd Holbrook, Stephan Merchant
  • Rated: R
  • My Rating:  ?? / 5

” In the near future, a weary Logan cares for an ailing Professor X somewhere on the Mexican border. However, Logan’s attempts to hide from the world and his legacy are upended when a young mutant arrives, pursued by dark forces. “

really wanted to like this. The trailers for this made it look so dark, gritty, and just good. My husband and I both left utterly disappointed. For a movie that relies so heavily on the characters and their internal struggles, I just didn’t feel it. For example, Professor X did something bad sometime before the events of this movie. It’s mentioned a few times, and then, the big moment where it seems like it’s going to get addressed in a deeper way…it just doesn’t. I left thinking “Well, I know something happened, I gather what it is, but I don’t feel the emotion in the film”.

That’s how I felt through the entire thing.

There was also some inconsistencies. Like how the little girl speaks Spanish and has an accent, but all the other kids (who are from the exact same place as her) don’t. There are other inconsistencies, but I don’t want to spoil anything.

Long story short, I just wasn’t impressed and Logan was asleep for half the movie – literally. I also really wanted it to be more post-apocalyptic like Old Man Logan.

Beauty and the Beast

  • Released: March 17, 2017
  • Directedby: Bill Condon
  • Screenplayby: Stephan Chbosky, Evan Spiliotopoulos
  • Starring: Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Luke Evans, Josh Gad, Ewan McGregor, Ian McKellen, Emma Thompson
  • MyRating: ????? / 5

” An adaptation of the fairy tale about a monstrous-looking prince and a young woman who fall in love. “

Of course, I loved this. Of course, I did.

They adapted this so well that I want to see it again and again and again. The songs were perfect, even the added originals fit in with the rest of soundtrack. The set design and CGI were beautiful. I love the way the castle and all the things inside it look, it was stunning. Emma Watson is adorable as Belle, as expected. It was just so good.

I would say my only complaint is that I didn’t feel like they connected Belle to the people/objects living in the castle like the animated version does. While beautiful, they were only sort of there and I didn’t care about their relationships with each other or with Belle like I do in the animated version.

But, c’mon, this movie is gorgeous and I can’t hate on it at all. So, just fangirl in the comments, ok?

Power Rangers

  • Released: March 24, 2017
  • Directedby: Dean Israelite
  • Screenplayby: John Gatins, Matt Sazama +
  • Starring:  Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler, Ludi Lin, Becky G., Elizabeth Banks, Bryan Cranston, Bill Hader
  • MyRating: ???? / 5

” A group of high-school students, who are infused with unique superpowers, harness their abilities in order to save the world. “

This one is just some good family fun. It’s super corny, but it’s fun so you can’t hate it. Also, it has a good cast of characters:

  • An actress of English and Indian descent
  • A Mexican-American actress who plays a gay ranger
  • A Chinese actor who doesn’t play a stereotype
  • A black actor who plays a ranger on the Autism spectrum

Honestly, Billy (ranger on the Autism spectrum) stole the show. I wouldn’t have liked this movie as much if he wasn’t in it. Basically, it was just a fun movie to watch. Don’t expect some deep and emotional film – it’s a fun, family friendly, action flick! Although, I couldn’t get past Elizabeth Banks being the bad guy because I kept seeing her as Effie (probably just me, though). Oh, and make sure you stay through till mid-credits – there’s a short scene!

Have you seen any of these? What did you think?
Do you want to see any of them?

I totally agree about Beauty and the Beast. I am looking forward to power rangers if only for the nostalgia. We should chat about Logan b/c I loved it. It relies heavily on the comic which is why it doesn’t go into detail about what happened with prof X. It’s SUPPOSED to be only alluded to. Like you know it’s bad and has to do with him giving the world seizures. But you just have to infer. I cried twice during the movie. But my husband and I are really into X-men.

For Logan, isn’t that the last Wolverine movie? So, when are they supposed to elaborate on what happened with Professor X? I guess that’s my problem. If it’s the last one, wrap it up and explain things. Guess it’s just differences in what we enjoy! haha cuz my husband loves all things Marvel & didn’t like it, but you guys did >.< Oh well! lol

I wasn’t crazy about Logan – I know a lot of people appreciate that it’s very different from the other X-Men movies, but I think that was part of the reason why I didn’t like it. I still need to see Beauty and the Beast!

I expected Logan to be different, but I was just bored through most of it haha Oh well! Definitely see Beauty and the Beast though!

I haven’t seen any of these, and probably won’t be anytime in the foreseeable future (haha it’s crunch time for school), however I’ve heard so many great things about the Power Rangers movie, and I adore the amount of diversity!

You’re responsible, I’m not lol Power Rangers was good! You should definitely see it if you find the time – or to celebrate after school ends!

I absolutely adored Logan (Wolverine is my favourite X-Men, what can I say?!) so I’m sorry to see you didn’t enjoy it. I can see where you’re coming from with some of the inconsistencies, though. But I also need to read more of the comics, so don’t have as much to compare it to!

I think I was just looking for something else based on what my husband said about the comics, so I was let down. but also, I was just kind of bored lol

I watched BatB the past weekend and I LOVED IT SO MUCH I CANNOT EVEN TELL YOU! It was so magical and wonderful and spectacular and I just couldn’t deal! And Emma looked so stunning and she was fully a bookworm (I liked how they didn’t take that out!) and GAH it was perfect sorry for the spaz!

YAY! It’s SO GOOD. And yes I LOVED Emma as Belle. No worries, I did say lets fangirl about it hahaha

Oh I agree with you about Beauty & The Beast, I loved it but somehow didn’t feel as connected to all the characters as I did in the animated movie version. It still was a great adaptation! 🙂

Yeah! I still really loved it. Which actually surprised me because I wasn’t a fan of the cartoon when I was younger haha

*sighs* I haven’t been to see a movie since Rogue 1… I just never manage to find the time for it 🙁 I’m really glad you loved Belle, though. That’s one I’d love to watch.

YAYYY BEAUTY AND THE BEAST! For the first time in Ever, I ADORED ALL OF THE SONGS and I desperately listened to them on repeat for days after! *she’s a funny girl that Belle*
I thought Logan was BETTER than it’s predecessors, but I’ve never been much of a fun for the character anyway and I haven’t heard of the third movie before this! I’ll definitely check it out!

Several BATB songs have been stuck in our heads since we saw it! We’ve even seen it again since I wrote this review, so it looks like they won’t be leaving any time soon lol

*SPOILERS FOR LOGAN* I felt the same. I felt like they left too many things unanswered (what exactly happened in the past, etc.) and for me it was honestly a pretty boring movie. I’ve never fully understood why he’s been in every single x-men movie (past, present and future? are there future ones? I don’t remember, there’s so many) but honestly I’m not disappointed he wont be in anymore. I used to really like his character but he’s definitely gone downhill for me.

BATB was fantastic. I went to it twice and loved it even more the second time. I only have minor issues with it, but overall I thought it was done super well!

Go, go Power Rangers! I actually really liked this movie. I wasn’t super invested in the core five, but I really liked everything overall. But like you said, it’s a fun, family-friendly action flick. Also, I kept seeing her as Effie too! It was weird seeing her as a villain. (Sorta like how Matthew McConaughey is the Man in Black for the Dark Towers movie! So weird.)

    • Reply Molly 05/06/2017 at 7:54 am

hahahah RIGHT. IDK, I just expected them to explain a little more considering it was the last one. I just wasn’t thrilled with Logan overall. Oh well.

I SAW IT A SECOND TIME TOO. Yeah, there are a few things I didn’t like but I still loved it. Even Matt liked it!

Also, EXACTLY. Like, it wasn’t AMAZING but it was just a fun movie. And thank god, someone else saw effie too. I was thinking I was the only one who just kept seeing that. She’ll never be able to play a villain for me lol
