The frost king will burn.

Seventeen-year-old Ruby is a Fireblood who has concealed her powers of heat and flame from the cruel Frostblood ruling class her entire life. But when her mother is killed trying to protect her, and rebel Frostbloods demand her help to overthrow their bloodthirsty king, she agrees to come out of hiding, desperate to have her revenge.

Despite her unpredictable abilities, Ruby trains with the rebels and the infuriating—yet irresistible—Arcus, who seems to think of her as nothing more than a weapon. But before they can take action, Ruby is captured and forced to compete in the king’s tournaments that pit Fireblood prisoners against Frostblood champions. Now she has only one chance to destroy the maniacal ruler who has taken everything from her—and from the icy young man she has come to love.

You know, this one is just hard to review. I didn’t hate it but I didn’t love it either. It was just an entertaining read that passed the time but I probably could have spent that time reading something a bit more original.

Yet, I think I’ll continue the series because I think it has the ability to surprise me.

The characters weren’t overly original. There was a mysterious male that was obviously going to be the love interest with the most predictable past. Said character also reminded me a bit of the love interest in The Witch Hunter in the way the romance bloomed. The main character, Ruby, wasn’t anything special either. Maybe you could say she was the “special snowflake”. There just wasn’t anything spectacular about any of the characters that’s worthy of even sharing in the review.

What I did like was the story, for the most part. There was too much training in this. If you know me, you know that I get very bored in novels that are full of I’ll make a man out of you chapters in stories. I just get really exhausted reading about the MC trying to perfect some sort of combat move or spell, failing, to then try again, to only finally get it when their life is nearly in danger.

While that may have bored me for several chapters, I did enjoy the premise. It is something that has been done, but it was the finer details that grabbed me. I can’t go into detail without spoiling things, but how and why she has to do the task she’s told to do is unique compared to other novels. Also, based on the titles of novel 2 and 3 in this series, I have a bit of a theory of the direction the series is going to go that has me pretty intrigued.

So, like I said, this isn’t the most original novel but at the same time I liked it. I wouldn’t even know who to recommend this to because of that. I suppose if you’re okay with a bit of unoriginal content but an intriguing back story and what could be a really interesting series, give this a try. If you feel you don’t have time for maybe‘s, don’t.

Side note: sorry for the incredibly short review. I read this 2 weeks ago so I don’t have many thoughts on it besides the basics >.<

I know exactly what you mean with this book. It wasn’t special or anything but it did just enough to intrigue me into reading the second book which took a while but by the end took an interesting route with the story and I will be reading the third book when it’s out. The characters didn’t totally stand out and neither did the romance so I’m not sure how the book convinced me to pick up the second.

Hmm…see I think it can improve JUST a little. But honestly, yeah, I don’t know what it is that has me wanting to read the next books haha

This one sounds like Red Queen, doesn’t it? Same idea for the cover, too. I’m glad it was a quick read, though. That’s a relief, because sometimes things that are not too original can drag a little (or a lot). I hope the sequels are fun and unique!

    that cover though!

This does not sound, unfortunately, like something I’d like to read. I’m quite tired of what feels like the forced romances that are required in most YA. Which makes me sad because I love YA. Love it.

I’ll have to content myself with one of the many other good YA books on the market.

Aw, yes, if you don’t think it’s something you’d like…definitely skip it! There is a bit of a forced romance so yeah haha I’d skip it
