Childhood Faves: Saturday Morning Cartoons

Today, let’s take a trip down memory lane.

Does anyone remember Saturday Morning Cartoons? If you’re an early 90’s kid, I bet you do. I remember waking up every Saturday morning, running out to the kitchen and plopping my butt on the couch to watch all my favorite cartoons. My dad would make me pancakes – I always asked for 3 but I only ever ate 1 – and I would watch till they were over. It was the best part of my day.

Unfortunately, I grew up and Saturday Morning Cartoons were eventually non-existent. Today, I’m going to bring some of my favorites back! So, let’s reminisce and wish we were kids again!

*sorry for the low-quality images, they’re old cartoons okay  😆

Rocko’s Modern Life and Ren & Stimpy – I really don’t know how children were allowed to watch some of these shows back then. I’m pretty sure Rocko and Ren & Stimpy were meant for adults. They’re so over the top but I loved them for some odd reason. They’re awesome and gross and you can’t help but watch. I even had the Ren & Stimpy video game on Super Nintendo!

Aaahh!!! Real Monsters – This was like the OG Monsters INC. For a child who was afraid of everything, I really liked this.

Dexter’s Laboratory – I just loved DeeDee always messing things up. I was a little sister, I enjoyed it, okay?  😆

CatDog – Do any of you remember that episode they built up to the entire season? You know the one that would finally explain how they went to the bathroom? WELL. I’m still bitter about that. Either way, I loved loved loved this show.

The Wild Thornberrys – She had a pet monkey. The family traveled. What was there not to like about this show?

Recess – It was recess, kids could relate. There was the cool kids, the nerdy kids, and I could totally relate to this group of outcasts. And Gretchen was my jam!

Hey Arnold! – This is the first show I remember watching having a whole plot line with a relationship, and the girl was the one who picked on Arnold! Did you ship Helga and Arnold?  😆

Rocket Power – You have no idea how much I loved this show. If I was to watch any Saturday Morning Cartoon, it had to be this one. I wouldn’t get up until I watched it – and God help my parents if there was a marathon. I even started wearing camo pants because of Reggie.

The Angry Beavers – This was probably my number 2 show next to Rocket Power. I loved their little home and they were cute little beavers just living a life. I don’t know, I was six years old, I liked animals.

Others worth mentioning

  • As Told by Ginger
  • The Fairly Odd Parents
  • The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius
  • Power Puff Girls
  • Pinky and the Brain
  • Johnny Bravo

Non-animated

  • Clarissa Explains It All
  • Kenan & Kel
  • Are You Afraid of the Dark?
  • All That
  • The Amanda Show

Did you watch any of these? If not, what were some of your favorite cartoons growing up? (I know we’re all different ages, so some of you may not even know these)

Ahhh this is so nostalgic! I mean, I haven’t watch all of them since foreign tv programmes weren’t exactly there yet when I was a kid, most of my morning cartoons are japanese or chinese. But there are some that I’ve watched and I truly loved: Cat Dog, Wild Thornberrys, Hey Arnold, Jimmy Neutron, and Angry Beavers omg! I almost forget about the Wild Thornberrys, but now that you mentioned it, I missed it a lot! Love this post Molly!

Aw yes! Wild Thornberry’s was so good. I remember when they came out with the movie and I HAD to watch it when it premiered haha

Oh man, we used to watch Are You Afraid of the Dark when my sister and I were really young, and my brother was even younger. One time he got so scared and my mom refused to let us watch it anymore… but we still did.

Ahhhh all the shows of my childhood. When I had Amazon Prime for a while, they had some of these, Season 1 at least, and I watched a bunch. And then just the other day, I was looking through old VHS tapes and found one that has some random Nick toons recorded on it, and I watched Rocko’s Modern Life and Ahh Real Monsters, haha. I haven’t finished the tape yet, but I totally plan to. And I agree, I feel like cartoons are too… censored nowadays. I mean, come on, look what we grew up with! Like you said, Rocko (which I think was my favorite) and Ren & Stimpy and some other shows were pretty weird and disturbing, but we turned out well enough 😉

HAH YES! Someone else did the recording on VHS. I LIVED by that with the Disney Channel movies hahah

I also totally forgot to mention Pinky & the Brian – I loved that one! but yes, cartoons are NOT what they used to be. I think the *closest* would be Adventure Time?

I know I watched Pinky & the Brain some, but I don’t remember it well. I’ve never seen Adventure Time. I feel like Gravity Falls was more like old cartoons, which was why I loved it. Like, not in an inappropriate way (it was on Disney Channel), but the humor was more just kinda weird sometimes. Star vs. the Forces of Evil is also a bit like that, but I haven’t seen that many episodes.

You’re the second person to mention Gravity Falls! I’ve never heard of it but I feel like I should check it out now haha

I am, unfortunately, too young to have remembered these shows. XD I grew up on The Replacements, The Emperor’s New Groove, That’s So Raven, Hannah Montana, Wizards of Waverly Place, Good Luck, Charlie, etc. I used to watch mainly PBS Kids growing up, and my favorites were definitely Cyberchase, Arthur, and Curious George! A more recent cartoon that I love is Gravity Falls; probably one of the best cartoons I’ve watched, ever. 😀

haha aw! no worries! I actually used to watch That’s So Raven, though! Otherwise, I didn’t watch the other ones you mentioned. I do love The Emperor’s New Groove movie, though! haha

This post is just my entire childhood. I mean, I remember some of the earlier 90s cartoons like x-men and Spiderman (I have an older brother, my tastes were influenced by him) but this is like my childhood when I was older. I loved Recess, I watched it religiously. And Ren & Stimpy was like my favourite cartoon even though I had no clue the adult content of it. I mean really, why did they show it on children’s TV? Rocket Power totally made me want to learn to skateboard and surf, I just wanted to be Reggie. I just want to rewatch these now. They should make a cartoon channel for 90s children everywhere.

YES! haha I’m glad you could relate to it. See, I only had an older sister who watched things like Invader Zim and…totally blanking on the other show…but it made me dislike them? haha siblings. Also, yes, some of those shows would never be shown to kids today hahah AND THEY SHOULD! They had a channel called Boomerang that showed all the pre-90’s cartoons…we need a 90’s one!

I will forever love CatDog. That cartoon is just so *sobs*… I miss being a kid. Oh, God. The Wild Thornberrys, Recess, Hey Arnold! and Rocket Power – I am sure to let my kids to watch them someday. PPG will always be a part of us girls and tease our friends being Johnny Bravo. *Sigh.* Thanks for these, Molly 🙂
