Kari is ripped from our world and thrown into a terrible future where safety is hard to come by and the very concept of freedom is hanging by a thread. Only a few years after massive destruction, Earth is a wasteland. The powers-that-be have an abundance of futuristic technology at their fingertips to keep the survivors in line, and the life they live is bleak. Though she knows her mysterious companion used some kind of magic power to time travel, he refuses to explain much more about her situation. She is forced to dig deep and discover how strong she really is capable of being.
Little does she know, there is far more to her story than even she could imagine.
A SKY WITH NO STARS is Part One of a three-part series.

PLOT

This book just dives you right into the story. Which was fantastic. This is a world built around some familiar dystopian elements, but Dillon makes it stand out with the magical elements and various societal conflicts. There’s plenty of mystery throughout as the MC is left in the dark about many things until later in the story – which will either be something you love or something you don’t.

PLOT (1)

Kari is the main protagonist and may be a hit or miss with you. I liked her, but it took some warming up. At first, she was annoying. She’s in this mysterious place she doesn’t know anything about so asking questions is going to be an obvious decision. However, if someone tells you “if you don’t be quiet you might die” and your next choice is to sit down and stop walking until you get answers, I might just find you a little annoying. However, she eventually comes to and becomes a pretty good female character who can hold her own.

Kipp is who she has to rely on in this new place. I liked his character. Again, he’s one you have to warm up to considering the events of the first few chapters, but once some of the mystery begins to be revealed it will start to make sense.

PLOT (2)

The writing and pacing are perfect. The book is fast paced, as I said, you dive right into the plot from the first page. Even though it’s fast paced, Dillon creates enough mystery to keep going. Nearly halfway through and still so many questions remained unanswered.

My only complaint with the pacing was the end. It felt rushed and incomplete. It is a cliffhanger, but it’s one of the biggest cliffhangers I’ve read. (Luckily, at the end of the book, there was a sneak peek at book 2, but still, that’s torture!)

PLOT (3)

For fans of dystopian novels, magic, & time travel, you’ll love this. Dillon builds an interesting world and leaves plenty of questions to encourage you to continue with book two. Even though I wasn’t particularly fond of Kari or Kipp in the beginning, I warmed up to both of them as the story progressed. And as I stated before, that ending was one of the biggest cliffhangers, but also kind of left me with a feeling of disappointment. However, the sequel should fix that right up!

The MC being left in the dark, especially if it’s because of other people just being vague and refusing to explain, is a really specific pet peeve of mine :-/ I like having answers and more often than not get annoyed if I don’t get them quickly lol. So this probably isn’t for me, but it does like it has some interesting aspects, and I’m glad you enjoyed it!

Yeah, if that’s something that bothers you, DEFINITELY don’t read this haha She’s left in the dark for most of the book, and there are still more questions at the end.

Hmmm this is the first I’ve heard of this book and I’m sorry it didn’t work out for you. I do tend to enjoy it when characters are in the dark though because I love the big reveal! As long as it’s done right, of course… I may need to check this out! Great review 😀
